Insulet Omnipod issue

If you're an OmniPod user, you've probably already seen this update. But just in case.

According to the TuDiabetes post
The update states that, if you hear a crackling noise or resistence when depressing the plunger of the fill syringe, you should discard the pod and use a new one - using the defective pod could result in under-delivery of insulin.
You should contact Insulet if you've had any problems.

While at the New England diabetes picnic last weekend I talked with two people who were using OmniPods. They're both very happy with it and in real life the 'pod' doesn't seem to present too many problems.

I'd love to try one out, but I think I'm going to wait until the unit's size (form factor) is smaller. Hopefully Insulet is already working on that.

Hi Bernard,

What you're describing is pretty rare, I think. I've had some other minor issues, but overall the OP has been very much worth it!

Check tomorrow's post at DiabetesMine for an update.

Best,
AmyT

I am intrigued by the unit but I think Im gonna wait till it's smaller.
Dont you have to carry a transmitter also..so I am confused what the advantage is. A pump on my hip or a trasnmitter on my hip.
I guess the plastic tubing issue is just traded for a larger site issue...anyway that's my guess is it's a trade from one or the other.

Hello Bernard,

I have never had the issue you describe. I have a few failed pods but nothing major. I love no wires and I can't wait until they intergrate the CGM.

Hi Bernard,

It's Ula. I've been diabetes type 1for 12 years now. Originally from Poland and living in Dublin now - (lovely city) :)Somewhere earlier I read you changed your previous pump into different model. May I ask you to sell or give me your old pump? Please, I need it desperately to improve my conditions.
Let me know...
Thanks & good luck with your diabetes!!
Ula

Hi Ula

Sorry, I traded in my old pump as a part payment on my new one. But if you try some of the diabetes groups, you may find someone who can help.

I was in Dublin last week and will be there again tomorrow. And I agree, it's a lovely city.

Hey there Bernard,
I've only been on the Omnipod since 14 May, but I truly love it. I do not notice the pod on my body. My favorite place to wear mine is on my arm - - I especially love it when people ask me about it.
I had a bum PDM at first, but Insulet quickly resolved the problem. In fact, I just returned from Europe and my Insulet rep lent me an extra PDM to have as a backup on my trip (along with an extra box of pods). I have been most impressed with the people who work for Insulet.
Please don't hesitate to ask me any questions about the pod - - I take it that you're such a "techie" that it may be hard for you to resist it for long. :-)

My sister is a brittle diabetic. Needs a pump desperately; however, she is uninsured, single, unemployed mother. Does anyone have a pump you no longer need? Dr. suggest the Medtronic, I've noticed the Omnipod is less expensive. Does anyone know if the omnipod is as good as the medtronic. If any suggestions, please post them.

Does anyone using the omnipod have issues with it being itchy? Does it feel itchy while it is on you almost to the point where you have to take it off? I have gone through so many wipes, latexfree adhesives, etc... and nothing is working. I am obviously allergic to the glue that they put on the pod but I do not want to give up using it. Any help????

Please help!! Does anyone have any itching issues. Does it feel itchy underneath the pod when you are wearing it? I am allergic to the adhesive on the omnipod and tried almost everything to put on my skin including nonlatex barrier, cremas, gels, iodine...nothing is working. I do not want to give up my omnipod but it feels like an itch underneath a cast when you can't get to it. Any ideas????

You should post your question in the Omnipod User group on TuDiabetes. I'll bet someone there has advice that would help.

Hi,

I have two boys ages 4 and 7. Both are Type 1.
The company who makes the Omnipods are graciously giving one of our sons a supply of Pods monthly for free. The pods are great but when we receive our prescription each month ( there's 10 in a box) at least 2 to 3 of them are defective. When we do not have enough to cover for the whole month, we have to go back to the dreaded needles. The company will not send more than what the prescription called for. I do not like going back and forth. There must be consistency when your giving insulin or your blood sugar reading will fluctuate.
I'm think of going back to insulin needles if the company will not fix this issue with there Pods.

Thanks for reading!

That sounds strange to me. When I've had problems with my Dexcom sensor, they are very good at replacing it. As I said in an earlier comment, post a question on the TuDiabetes Omnipod Users group and see what others are finding out. I'd love to know whether you get improved customer service.

I've been using the Omni Pod for about 9 months now, and I am wondering if you guys have experienced any type of nausea or loss of appetite from using this pump. My loss of appetite has led to several hypoglycemic incidents. I've had multiple labs drawn, to narrow it down to ulcers or some other type of gastro related illness, but so far the results have be negative. I am starting to think it may be related to the pod (if that's even possible?) I just wanted to see if anyone has shared a similar experience.
